In a Laughlin, Nevada, conference room, a group gathered to share their abduction stories. For two hours, they swapped accounts of otherworldly beings and strange craft. One man remained silent until the very end. When he finally spoke, he asked a single question. Has anyone else had odd experiences involving owls? Every hand in the room went up.

This moment, recorded in Mike Clelland’s book The Messengers, captures a strange through-line in the fabric of alien encounter narratives…the recurring presence of owls. Unlike the diverse descriptions of extraterrestrial beings, owl sightings appear with striking consistency across accounts, most famously recounted by Whitley Strieber. Yet, in the broader discourse on UFOs and disclosure, these elements often go unexamined, overshadowed by pursuits of tangible evidence like physical artifacts or verifiable data. What owls offer is a glimpse into the perceptual and psychological dimensions of these interactions, suggesting that the entities involved may shape human memories in deliberate ways.

In the book, Clelland shares personal accounts that highlight how owls frequently serve as what researchers term “screen memories” or substitute images overlaid on actual events to obscure or soften the reality. As an example, Clelland tells the story of a man in Louisiana who was sitting on his porch late one night. He notices movement at the edge of his property. At first, it seems like shadows shifting in the branches, but as he approaches, pale forms emerge. He counts fifteen or twenty owls perched in a single tree, all staring directly at him.

As you would expect, this sighting stuck with the man. So much so, he went home and sketched the owls from memory to show a local game warden. Upon looking at the drawings, the game warden responded, “There aren’t owls that big here. If that’s what you saw, something is wrong with your memory.” The comment bothered the man so much that he later sought hypnotic regression therapy to reexamine his memory. Under hypnosis, the therapist urged him to remember the owls. After a pause, he says, “Those aren’t owls.” His memory immediately dissolved and a new memory replaced the one he had. He was no longer looking at owls. He was standing alone in the darkness surrounded by 3 grey aliens.

Memory transformations like this are not isolated. Clelland’s book recounts hundreds of similar cases where owls initially mask encounters with otherworldly beings. In another story, a couple is driving at night along a remote country road. They were completely alone. Suddenly, three small figures appear on the side of the road. The woman perceives them as children in ghost costumes. Her boyfriend remembers them as giant white owls.

This shared event, remembered so differently, underscores the malleable nature of perception in these encounters. The entities personalize memories based on the individual. They create custom stories that align with personal expectations or fears. To me, the choice of owls appears intentional. These beings are leveraging a symbol already embedded in human consciousness. If the goal was complete erasure, the beings could wipe the memory clean or replace it with something mundane. Instead, they implant something anomalous like oversized owls in improbable numbers or settings. Instead, they implant slightly strange memories, ensuring the memory persists.

Owls also appear as precursors to sightings, almost like harbingers. Clelland tells the story of a camper in Arizona who noticed an owl staring at him from a nearby tree. Each time he alerts his friend of the owl, the bird flies away, only to return and resume its staring, once the friend has looked away. After its final departure, both men witnessed a massive black triangular craft gliding silently across the sky. Similarly, in the 1990s, crop circle investigator Bert Jansen in Wiltshire, England, observes a glowing orb drifting across a field before vanishing into an old shed. Upon entering the shed, he discovered a nest of baby owls, which is an odd, and slightly anticlimactic, resolution to this strange story.

However, these stories challenge the straightforward interpretations of the UFO phenomena. They suggest that the beings involved draw from humanity’s existing symbolic lexicon rather than inventing new ones. Owls have occupied a liminal space in cultural mythologies for millennia which bridge the gap between the mundane and the mystical. In ancient Greece, the owl was Athena’s companion, which was emblematic of her wisdom and foresight. Greece even minted coins that bore the owl’s image alongside Athena. In Roman lore, they cast the owl as a harbinger of death. Ancient writers even linked owl cries to the assassination of Julius Caesar.

Indigenous traditions come to a similar conclusion. Amongst the Cherokee, the great horned owl is connected to witchcraft and mortality. In medieval Europe, owls are featured in ritual manuals and folklore as inhabitants of the underworld. Villagers would nail the corpses of owls to their doors as wards against evil. Across these disparate cultures, owls consistently embody a threshold between realms.

Even in contemporary elite circles, the owl retains this potent symbolism. At Bohemian Grove, where the world’s elite meet annually, a forty-foot stone owl statue is the center of their activities. Robed participants perform the “Cremation of Care” ritual before the owl, where they burn an effigy for prosperity. In this ritual, the owl represents Moloch, the Canaanite god famous for child sacrifice and power. What matters, as it pertains to this story, is the deliberate invocation of the owl as a conduit to deeper, forbidden, knowledge.

This historical pattern implies that if inter-dimensional entities were seeking to signal an encounter’s “otherness”, owls provide a ready-made archetype. They evoke a sense of the uncanny without overwhelming terror. They plant a seed of doubt that spreads like a virus over time. The memory becomes a puzzle, where the experiencer is missing the final piece. The memory is never erased, but it is encrypted, inviting gradual contemplation. The memory acts as a reminder that something has happened. They conceal the event while revealing the concealment.

I believe that this approach completely reframes the concept of “disclosure” in UFO studies. The public demand for revelation assumes that a truth has been withheld. Whether that is in the form of government files, crash debris, or unambiguous footage, we assume that the truth is guarded by humans who have the answers. But these stories suggest otherwise. The phenomenon stages its own unveiling, doling out fragments on its own terms. Experiencers never receive clarity. They get symbolic downloads and dreams. The public gets blurry videos and promises that the REAL information will be coming soon. Governments and researchers may grasp pieces, but no one holds a complete, unadulterated copy.

The implication extends to our understanding of reality itself. If perceptions can be so readily manipulated, then trust in our own sensory experience erodes (hello AI). These beings, whatever their nature, operate in a realm where truth is not a fixed entity but a constructed one, tailored to human cognition’s limits. We don’t encounter the phenomenon in its raw form. Our vision is mediated. We are children sitting in front of a TV screen absorbing whatever is put in front of our eyes.

The consistency of owls across cultures and eras points to a deep-seated human recognition of the symbol’s power. Yet in modern encounters, it serves a new purpose. It is a gentle prod toward awareness, without the shock of full exposure. Perhaps this is mercy and preparation. But there is a more frightening possibility; it is about control. It is flex of power. These stories remind us that the boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary is thinner, and more permeable, than we assume.

In 2015, dozens of strange bodies were found sealed inside a cave in southern Peru. Three fingers, three toes, elongated skulls, curled into a fetal position and coated in a preservative powder. Some of them appear to be pregnant. CT scans show real bone, real joints, and what look like eggs developing inside the abdomen.

But the bodies are only part of the story. The Nazca knew how to draw normal humans and their everyday art proves that. When they wanted to show something other than human, they changed the features on purpose and added things like three-fingered hands, stretched heads, fangs, bursting energy. These belonged to beings tied to sacrifice, fertility, and power. And the culture before them, the Paracas, physically reshaped their children's skulls from birth to match that same nonhuman shape.

This video looks at the mummies, the art, the skull modification, Andean cosmology, and what cargo cults can teach us about how humans respond after contact with something they can't explain. It's not a "real or fake" debate. It's about why this pattern exists at all and why it shows up all over the world.

Taylor McMahon: On a peaceful day in 1836, a brand new temple opened in the small town of Kirtland, Ohio. Hundreds crowded inside for its dedication. The day began like any normal Church service, but when the night fell, a different type of ritual began. A small group of chosen congregants washed their bodies. Thick oils were pressed onto their skin and they drank sacramental wine.

Then it started. Fire fell from the sky. Angels appeared. The room erupted into shouts and songs and tongues. Entire crowds collapsed into trances. And according to them, they saw heaven. Eyewitnesses swore that the angels of God appeared unto them and that a pillar of fire rested down upon the temple.

Joseph Smith, their leader, had promised them “Tonight, you will see God” and he delivered. To outsiders, this story has always sounded absurd. The foundations of Mormonism have long been mocked, and to be fair, the story is strange, but the evidence suggests that something did happen in that temple. Something bizarre. Something far stranger than most can imagine.

The question isn’t whether visions erupted that night. The real question is what caused them? That’s what we’re going to uncover.

This is the psychedelic origins of Mormonism.

These claims may sound wild, but I’m not alone in this line of thinking. Some researchers have begun to connect the dots between early Mormon visions and psychedelics.

One of them is Alex Criddle.

Alex Criddle: I’m Alex. I’ve been studying psychedelics for a decade now. I got introduced to them actually through Ketamine assisted psychotherapy for my depression anxiety. And under them, I was having visions like the early Saints did, and I went, holy shit, I think Joseph Smith was on drugs. And kind of launched into the research because I’d already been involved in Mormon academia. I work as a Mormon history researcher right now, and I have for a few years.

Taylor McMahon: But this isn’t just a story of anecdotes. There are real reasons to believe that early Mormons use psychedelics. But to understand that, we need to go back to the beginning and learn about its founder.

Joseph Smith was born in 1805 in Vermont, but he was raised in upstate New York in the burned over district. And this region was the epicenter of the Second Great Awakening, and it was called the burned over district because it was scorched by revival after revival.

Then at age 14, Joseph walked into the woods to ask God which church was true, and that’s when the heavens opened. And as Joseph tells it, God the Father and Jesus Christ stood before him. They told him that none of the churches were true and that he must start his own. Later, an angel named Moroni appeared and told him about golden plates hidden inside of a nearby hill.

On those plates were the record of an ancient civilization in America. Joseph claimed that he had been chosen to translate them. And from there, he dictated what would become the Book of Mormon. And that’s the story that most people know. A boy prophet, golden plates and a new scripture. But if you look closer at the soil he grew up in, and the visions of his family, another picture starts to take shape.

A psychedelic family that created a psychedelic church. In that world of trances and visions, Joseph grew up hearing stories in his own household. Dreams and cures and old symbols. The Smith Family tales stretch back generations, and those stories shaped Joseph’s imagination long before he ever stepped foot into a revival tent.

But it was Joseph’s father’s dreams that actually ended up being recorded into the Book of Mormon itself.

Alex Criddle: Then Joseph’s father, Joseph Sr. has a series of seven visions. One of these dreams that Joseph Sr has actually is incredibly reminiscent of a vision that’s in the Book of Mormon. So Joseph Sr has a dream where he has this spirit guide who shows up, presumably after partaking of a substance, which I’ll get to in a second. And this guide kind of takes him through this scary landscape and kind of teaches him things and leads him to this box. And in this box there is a piece of white fruit that he describes as like a chestnut burr.

He opens it up and there’s like white seeds in it, and he partakes of the fruit and it makes him happy. The spirit guide tells him that this is, you know, the love of God. This is like wisdom personified. I actually think that Joseph Sr’s dreams map onto a datura experience, because the way he describes it is this spiky fruit.

Taylor McMahon: And it wasn’t only Joseph Sr who had visions, his mother, Lucy Mack, and his maternal grandfather, Solomon Mack, both had life-changing encounters of their own. Beyond Joseph’s psychedelic heritage, he also inherited his family’s fascination with the occult. And at the center of their fascination was Freemasonry.

Joseph’s father was deeply involved. In both Masonry and the occult. He believed that Joseph’s birth was prophetic. He thought that Joseph was a child marked for hidden knowledge. And at the time, mind altering substances were not unusual in Masonic rituals. They would blend symbols and psychoactive herbs to open the mind.

Alex Criddle: Most of his ideas come from Christian occultism, Platonism, Masonry. Freemasonry was, um, this brotherhood that kind of started sometime in like the sixteen early seventeen hundreds. The founding myth of free masonry is Hiram Abiff. Hiram Abiff was this Mason who was working on Solomon’s temple from the Bible, as they were building it.

He had this secret knowledge and wisdom. And he was killed by other masons, and that wisdom was kind of lost. And so Masonry is basically trying to restore that lost wisdom. The same type of thing that Joseph was doing, trying to restore the lost wisdom of the ancient religions.

And they had these series of rituals and ceremonies to initiate people into masonry to give them secret keys, secret knowledge. Eventually Joseph, he comes and joins free masonry and starts his own lodge in Nauvoo. But before that, he’s developing this temple ceremony. Very similar to the Masonic rituals and initiations

Taylor McMahon: Historians have documented that the Smith family owned several occult books, including Francis Barrett’s The Magus, and Ebenezer Sibly’s Occult Sciences.

These books were manuals for ritual practice with instructions on how to summon spirits and draw protective circles and prepare plants for visions. They even described how to burn nightshade or datura to summon spirits. Joseph carried those ideas into the objects that he kept. He owned a ceremonial cane carved with a serpent from Eden. It also bore these symbols of Saturn and Jupiter, along with an inscription that read “Jupiter Reigns Over Joseph Smith”. But Joseph’s world wasn’t shaped by symbols alone. The same books that taught him about planets and spirits also spoke about plants. Herbs that could heal the body and open the mind.

And in the early 1800s, those plants were everywhere. Nightshades, like datura, were prescribed for epilepsy and nausea and eye problems, and they were even used as a cheap substitute for opium. The form of psychedelic nightshade that was used in medicine grew on nearly every single corner in the northeast.

It was freely available to everyone. Psychedelics weren’t a fringe curiosity in Joseph’s day. They were part of daily life. These weren’t drugs, in the modern sense, they were just medicine. And as Joseph saw it, they were God-given herbs meant to open the mind

Alex Criddle: In the first presidency, while Joseph is alive, he always had a trained herbalist who was his right hand man, who had an apothecary, who had a greenhouse, who knew how to work with these things.

And the inner circle probably knew exactly what was going on, but they didn’t necessarily have the concept of like drugs that we have today. They didn’t have this like materialistic concept that we did of like, oh, we’re gonna ingest this plant and it is going to cause this from brain up kind of thing.

It didn’t matter if you were having a vision that was caused by a drug or if God spontaneously caused this vision, or if you had a seizure and had a vision. Like all of these things were just kind of like, they were just natural. So it makes perfect sense that God gave us herbs to help see these visions.

Taylor McMahon: And Joseph didn’t leave it to chance. You can actually watch him refine his process over time.

In the beginning, the visions were raw and often terrifying. His followers often saw dark entities, but as he practiced, Joseph refined his methods. He learned how to perfect the set and setting for a guided communal experience.

It should also be noted that these reports don’t only come from Mormon sources. In 1831, a preacher named Jesse Jasper Moss attended a sacrament meeting in Kirtland, Ohio. He was convinced that the wine was tampered with. And he actually tried to steal some so he could have it tested. Early on, Joseph said a unique rule for the sacraments. The Saints could only use wine that he prepared for them.

There were no outside suppliers, no third party distributors, and most importantly, no oversight. This meant that Joseph alone controlled what went into that cup, and it wasn’t just the wine. Before visions began, participants were washed and whiskey infused with cinnamon and herbs. They were then anointed with a heavy consecrated oil, and these oils could have easily carried psychoactive drugs into the skin. One participant later recalled that the visions always followed the anointing. All of this work came to a climax in March of 1836 at the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. After the anointing and the wine, Joseph’s followers lost themselves in ecstasy.

Congregants had ecstatic visions and heard choirs of angels singing above their heads. Even Frederick G. Williams, Joseph’s doctor, and herbalist. Saw a tall figure dressed in white walk through the temple. For a year, Joseph had told his followers that at this temple dedication, they would see God, that it would be a new Pentecost.

And that night, after everyone had left, Joseph and his inner circle locked the doors to the church, and then it began. The reports of that night are completely bizarre. Joseph’s own brothers staggered to the window to vomit. Others collapsed, convulsed, and fell flat on their back before erupting in visions.

Some swore that the building itself caught fire, but no one was burned. And it didn’t stop with one night for a full week, his inner circle returned after dark Each night they drank the wine, anointed themselves with oil, and saw heaven. The Kirtland dedication became the most visionary week in Mormon history.

Outsiders mocked it as madness, but for the believers inside of those locked doors, it was proof. For Joseph, this was his masterpiece. A ritual that turned Pentecost into something repeatable, a way to summon God on command. But for Joseph and his followers, the fire didn’t last. In June of 1844, Joseph Smith was murdered in Carthage jail.

After his death, the wild visions of early Mormonism stopped completely. The prophet who could deliver angels was gone, and what followed was a battle for control. Charisma had built the movement, but logistics would keep it alive. Brigham Young emerged as the leader.

Alex Criddle: Brigham wasn’t this visionary type person.

He admitted himself that ‘Hey, I’m not the visionary that Joseph was’. He didn’t have the same interest in the occult that Joseph did. He didn’t have the same interest in the type of visions that he did. He was the go-getter. He was the organizer. He was very strict, like, ‘Hey, I’m in control of everything’.

Whereas Joseph was, he was a lot more like, ‘Hey, let’s everybody have visions’. This sort of communal type experienced person.

Taylor McMahon: Why do you think he chose Brigham Young?

Alex Criddle: He didn’t.

Taylor McMahon: Interesting.

Alex Criddle: So Joseph Smith’s kid was actually the one being groomed to be the next prophet, but then some of his first presidency were like, well wait, I should be Prophet.

Brigham Young was like, well wait, I should be prophet. So like, and that’s why we see the schism of dozens of different sects of Mormonism that came out of this period. Because Joseph III, Joseph’s kid, was only like 11 years old, so he wasn’t old enough to run the church. But Brigham essentially kind of built up the most allies and threw the correct people under the bus. Six months later, after Joseph dies, takes control of the Church.

Taylor McMahon: The wild visionary chaos of Joseph’s church was replaced by hierarchy, order, and discipline. Where Joseph had fire and revelation, Brigham pointed to the ‘still small voice’. His faith was based on subtle internal inspiration, not public ecstasy.

And over time the rules hardened the Word of Wisdom, once just a health suggestion, became law. Alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, were all forbidden. The same church that once brewed its own sacramental wine, now Bandit completely. The entheogenic roots were buried under commandments and control.

But this is a common story. Many religions begin under similar circumstances. Rituals, fuel by psychedelics, produce visions powerful enough to rip people out of their ordinary reality and thrust them into the realm of the unseen. And then, over time, the fire burns out. Institutions move on. Rules replace ecstasy, and the visions vanish, but the religion remains.

Mormonism followed that same pattern. Now, I’m not a Mormon, but like so many religions, when entire crowds claim to see entities or other realms, we should take them seriously. Something happened, something powerful enough to ignite a faith that still exists today.

The question isn’t what was in the cup. The real question is whether those visions came from heaven or from somewhere else entirely.

These aren’t Hallmark miracles for calendars and inspirational quotes. They are unsettling stories that disrupted empires and terrified entire cities. They involve kings, monks, saints, and ordinary people who were never the same afterward. They leave physical evidence, sworn testimony, liturgies, and feast days in their wake.

Set them beside modern encounter reports and they look like contact. Set them beside Scripture and they resemble warnings of floods and the predetermined downfall of kings. Maybe they are both. The best word for them is divine intervention. These stories have been buried but they should never have been forgotten.

The earliest account I found comes from Jerusalem in the 1st century, during the First Jewish–Roman War. In 70 AD, as the Roman army surrounded the city in preparation to destroy the Temple, witnesses said the sky suddenly filled with lights.

The historian Flavius Josephus recorded it in his book, The Jewish War, where he wrote:

“Chariots and troops of soldiers in their armor were seen running about among the clouds, and surrounding of cities.”

Early Christian writers would later see this as a fulfillment of Christ’s warning that Jerusalem would be “surrounded by armies.” But even without that interpretation, the event stands on its own as a recorded phenomenon and a historical fact.

It is important to remember that Josephus, as a Jew, had no incentive to support Christian prophecy, yet he documented celestial armies moving in the sky.

A few centuries later, another phenomenon was reported over Jerusalem. In 351 AD, during the episcopacy of Cyril, a large cross-shaped light appeared in the sky. Multiple accounts describe it stretching from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives, remaining visible for days. A letter, attributed to Cyril, claimed it was brighter than the sun.

This was witnessed by large crowds across the city. It was not described as a personal revelation, but a public incident. The appearance was later commemorated in liturgical tradition. Whether interpreted as a divine sign or a warning, it was treated as a real occurrence, recorded and preserved by Church authorities.

In Constantinople (447 AD), a strange abduction occurred in plain sight during a series of earthquakes. Emperor Theodosius II and Patriarch Proclus were leading public prayers in the streets asking for God’s mercy. During one of these gatherings, a young boy was reportedly lifted into the air by an unseen force. He was lifted so high, the people on the ground lost sight of him.

He eventually floated back down to the ground and reported that he had been surrounded by glowing beings that sang hymns in a language he couldn’t understand.

Bishops at the time wrote that the entire crowd saw it. Modern terminology would call this event a mass sighting but in the fifth century, it was treated as a message and a sign of divine intervention.

As I moved forward in time, I found that these phenomena continued to appear at decisive moments that shaped recorded history and Christian tradition.

In 507 AD, on the fields near Poitiers, Clovis I, king of the Franks, was engaged in a battle against the Visigoths. His forces were weakening. According to accounts rooted in Gregory of Tours and later chroniclers, a bright light appeared in the night sky and remained suspended above the field.

It did not streak like a meteor or pass like a comet. It held position, then moved ahead, as if leading the army. Clovis followed it and by the morning, the Visigothic king, Alaric II, was dead and the tide of battle had turned. Clovis converted to Catholicism soon after. This one conversion tied the emerging country of France to the Roman Church for centuries.

Chroniclers recorded this light as the decisive factor in the victory. The Church remembered it as providence.

In 540 AD, another event was documented by Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western monasticism. He was praying at dawn at Monte Cassino and, according to Gregory the Great in his Dialogues, Benedict saw a light break across the night sky, intensify, and form into a globe of fire. Within it, he saw the soul of Germanus, Bishop of Capua, being carried upward towards heaven.

Benedict called for his deacon, who arrived in time to see the fading light of the orb. Days later, messengers confirmed that Bishop Germanus had died at the exact hour of Benedict’s vision.

Gregory emphasized that Benedict insisted this was not an inward vision but a real orb. He treated it as an objective event. Benedict believed he had seen a soul transported. The Church preserved this story as a miracle.

Around 675 AD, a similar phenomenon occurred at the Barking Abbey in England. Nuns were keeping vigil over the graves and according to Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History, a bright light descended like a sheet, circled the ground, and then rose back into the sky.

The nuns were so shaken that they stopped praying. The event was later interpreted as a sign marking the place where their own bodies would one day rest before resurrection. It was neither an apparition nor a vision. It was treated as a geographical message, delivered through light.

These women were not seeking visions. They were keeping the traditional hours of prayer. Whatever they saw, it disrupted routine, instilled fear, and remained in the record of the English Church.

In the early ninth century, in Lyon, under Archbishop Agobard, rumors spread among the people of aerial ships from a place they called Magonia. According to popular belief, sailors descended from the clouds to steal crops during storms.

Four individuals were accused of falling from these mysterious sky ships and were nearly executed. Archbishop Agobard intervened to stop the murder. He declared the beliefs superstitious and condemned the attempted killing. Yet in arguing against the story, he wrote it down in full.

In his treatise On Hail and Thunder, Agobard unintentionally preserved one of the earliest references to flying vessels in European history. The bishop did not believe it but his account confirms that a widespread belief in aerial craft existed long before modern sightings.

In 1425, in the village of Domrémy, a thirteen-year-old girl named Joan began reporting visitations. According to the records from her later trial at Rouen, she said that the beings were often surrounded by light. Like the previous accounts, these were not described as visions. They were recorded as real encounters. One inquisitor asked directly if she saw the light with her physical eyes, and she answered yes.

She identified St. Michael, St. Catherine, St. Margaret as the beings visiting her. They directed her to take up arms and lead armies. Within two years, she was altering the course of the Hundred Years’ War.

Centuries later, when the Church revisited her case, it concluded that her voices were genuine and canonized her as a saint. Modern interpretations often reduce her to political symbol or psychological case. But the documentation, taken at face value, describes repeated contact with a luminous intelligence that issued instructions with national consequences.

In 1531, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City, an event occurred that would lead to one of the largest mass conversions in history. Juan Diego, an indigenous farmer, reported that a radiant woman appeared to him and requested a chapel be built on the hill they stood on. After sharing his story with a local bishop, the bishop demanded proof.

According to the earliest written account, the Nican Mopohua, Juan Diego returned with his cloak filled with roses out of season. When he opened it, an image was imprinted on the fabric that he used to carry the roses. The image shows The Virgin Mary surrounded by rays of light, wearing stars and standing on a crescent. The tilma still survives today.

Whatever you believe about this image, its impact is undisputed. Millions entered the Church in the following years. Popes have referenced the tilma as both icon and mystery. Scientific examinations of the fabric have raised more questions than answers.

These accounts point to the reality of an unseen realm that directly intervenes in human affairs. Across every century, these events follow a pattern. They appear in moments of upheaval, they intervene, and then history is changed.

To call them “contact” is to use modern language for an ancient reality. The people who saw these things did not describe visitors from another world. The Church gave them names: angels and demons. Real intelligences, acting with purpose and free will. And as far as I can tell, angels and demons are a much better explanation for these sightings than visitors from another planet. I believe they are messengers from the other side, intervening when we need them most. Since they once saw it fit to guide kings and saints, what does it mean that we still see them today?

The Moon-Eyed People and Fort Mountain

In Cherokee oral history, there are stories of a light-skinned group who could not tolerate sunlight and who built strange stone structures. These people were called the Moon-Eyed People. According to tradition, the Cherokee drove them out when they arrived in the Appalachian region.

Fort Mountain in Georgia is home to a zigzagging stone wall that stretches nearly 900 feet across the summit and measures up to 12 feet thick. There is no clear archaeological record linking it to the Cherokee or any known mound-building culture in the area. Early American records suggest that Chief Oconostota told pioneer John Sevier that the wall was built by white men who came from across the ocean. These men were described as being in the region long before Europeans.

Denisovans and the Genetic Clues

In 2010, scientists discovered a finger bone and large molars in Denisova Cave in Siberia. The teeth were so large that researchers initially thought they belonged to a bear. DNA testing confirmed they came from a distinct hominin group now known as the Denisovans.

Further discoveries on the Tibetan Plateau in 2019 revealed a jawbone with Denisovan DNA. The size and density of the bone suggested a robust human, much larger and more powerful than Homo sapiens or Neanderthals. Some researchers estimate they could have stood over seven feet tall.

Initially, Denisovan DNA was believed to exist only in Melanesian and Australasian populations, such as Papuans and Aboriginal Australians. However, a 2015 genetic study identified traces of Denisovan DNA in some Amazonian tribes. This was not a minor overlap. These populations carried a second source of Denisovan ancestry, unrelated to the known Siberian connection. The discovery suggested that a Denisovan-related group had crossed into the Americas far earlier than previously understood.

Consistent Stories Across Tribes

Multiple tribes across the Americas have similar stories of strange, tall, pale-skinned people who came before them. The Choctaw in the Mississippi Valley described the Nahullo, white-skinned giants who practiced cannibalism. When Europeans arrived, the Choctaw reportedly used the same name for them.

The Comanche told of ten-foot-tall giants who were eventually destroyed. The Navajo recalled the Starnake People, pale beings who mined the earth and enslaved others. The Paiute of Nevada described the Si-Te-Cah, red-haired cannibals who lived in Lovelock Cave. In the early 20th century, red hair and split bones were discovered during excavations of that cave.

Stories from Central and South America also describe gods or mysterious strangers who arrived from the sea. These figures were often credited with teaching building skills and introducing new technologies before disappearing.

Monumental Structures and Celestial Precision

In addition to oral history and genetic markers, physical monuments across the continent reflect a high degree of engineering skill. The Great Serpent Mound in Ohio is nearly 1,400 feet long. It features a spiral tail and a snake’s head that aligns with the summer solstice. The Newark Earthworks stretch across four square miles and track the moon’s 18.6-year cycle with accuracy that challenges modern surveyors.

Cahokia in Illinois once supported a population of over 20,000. Its central mound, known as Monks Mound, is larger at its base than the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was paired with a timber circle, often called Woodhenge, that marked seasonal solar events.

When early settlers asked Native informants who built these mounds, the answer was often the same. The builders were already gone when their ancestors arrived.

A Vanished Chapter

The cumulative evidence from oral traditions, genetic data, and monumental architecture suggests that another population may have existed in the Americas long before the ancestors of today’s Native Americans. This population is described in similar terms across vast distances and cultures. It is remembered as large, strange, and technologically capable. And in some cases, as dangerous.

Whether these people were Denisovans, a Denisovan-related group, or something else entirely remains uncertain. But the persistence of the stories, and the scientific evidence now backing parts of them, supports the idea that human history in the Americas is far older and more complex than we once thought.

Rosslyn Chapel has always attracted truth seekers. It appears in thrillers and conspiracy theories, wrapped in stories about the Knights Templar and ancient bloodlines. It is a place people point to when they feel there is something beneath the surface of things. Something hidden. Something holy. But the truth is stranger than the legends.

This chapel does not just hold music. It is music.

Inside, along the arches, are 213 stone cubes, each carved with strange dots and lines. For centuries, no one knew what they meant. Most called them decoration, assuming they were the work of a whimsical stonemason. But in 2007, a father and son named Thomas and Stuart Mitchell noticed something others had missed. These were not random symbols. They were sound.

The cubes, it turned out, were cymatic patterns. Cymatic patterns are shapes created by sound waves moving through matter. If you take a plate of metal, sprinkle it with sand, and run a frequency through it, the sand forms a shape. The shape depends on the frequency. This is cymatics. The Mitchells matched each cube in the chapel to a specific tone, then played them in sequence.

The result was a slow, chant-like hymn. The Rosslyn Motet.

When played inside the chapel, something strange happens. The building seems to respond. The melody fills the space, folds in on itself, echoes back in patterns that feel deliberate. It is as if the structure recognizes the song. As if the room is completing it.

Rosslyn is not the only place where this happens.

Medieval builders believed that sound and form were not separate. They believed that music and architecture spoke the same language. They used musical ratios to guide their design. The octave, a 2:1 ratio. The fifth, a 3:2 ratio. These were not just mathematical tricks. They were sacred. They were ways of aligning the built world with the divine.

Cathedrals like Chartres and Notre Dame were constructed according to these principles. The structures themselves became instruments. The space was designed to resonate. To lift the spirit. To bring the unseen into form.

Rosslyn follows the same path. The proportions of the building echo musical intervals. The stone itself carries the song. And when that song is played, the room becomes a vessel. Not just for sound, but for meaning. Not just for the ears, but for the soul.

Architecture is often described as frozen music. In Rosslyn, the music has begun to thaw. You can hear it. You can feel it. Something in the geometry, in the ratios, in the silence between sounds, points beyond itself. The builders were not just making a place where people would come to worship. They were building the worship itself.

The modern world no longer builds this way. Our buildings speak of function, economics, and practicality. The old builders spoke of beauty, transcendence, and of order beyond what the eye could see.

Rosslyn stands against this forgetting. It is a relic, yes, but also a revelation. It shows what we used to know. That sound is not noise. That space can pray. That the sacred sometimes hides in stone, in silence, in subtle harmonies we have forgotten how to hear.

  If an animal like the coelacanth, a fish thought to be extinct for 66 million years, can suddenly turn up in the ocean in 1938, what else might have survived? Some species may have lived longer than we assume, overlapping with early human history.

• The Crocodile Connection
  Crocodiles have been around for 200 million years, barely changing. Some prehistoric species were 40 feet long, virtually indistinguishable from what ancient people described as dragons. Could our ancestors have encountered these creatures and woven them into myth?

• The Sasquatch Parallel
  Gorillas were dismissed as mythical creatures until their official discovery in 1847. Ancient explorers wrote about “hairy wild men” in the forests, only for them to turn out to be real. Could the same thing have happened with dragons?

Second Sight & The World of the Fairies

Throughout history, tales of otherworldly encounters have captivated the human imagination. From the mystical realm of fairies to the perplexing phenomenon of UFO sightings, these experiences seem to transcend time and culture. The story of Robert Kirk, a 17th-century Scottish minister, and the work of renowned UFOlogist Jacques Vallée shed light on the intriguing connections between these seemingly disparate realms.

Born in 1644 in Aberfoyle, Scotland, Robert Kirk was a respected minister in the Church of Scotland and an avid collector of mystical lore. His doctoral thesis focused on the fascinating world of fairies, which he later expanded into his magnum opus, "The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies," completed in 1691.

In his book, Kirk documented the hidden world of fairies, their customs, hierarchies, and interactions with humans. He described three distinct types of fairies: the benevolent "Seelie" fairies, associated with light and goodness; the malevolent "Unseelie" fairies, linked to darkness and harm; and the most intriguing of all, the "co-walkers," fairies that attach themselves to human beings and live alongside them in a parallel world, mimicking their actions as doppelgängers.

Kirk also explored the concept of "second sight," a hereditary ability to perceive and communicate with the fairy world. Those gifted with this ability were believed to see fairies, predict future events, and communicate with the dead, as long as they remained in their ancestral homeland.

Tragically, on May 14, 1692, Kirk took a walk on the fairy hill near his home in Aberfoyle and never returned. His lifeless body was discovered on the hill, but according to legend, his ghost appeared to his brother-in-law, Graham of Duchray, claiming that he was not dead but had been taken by the fairies. Kirk's spirit instructed Graham to throw a dagger at his ghost during his funeral the next day to free him from the fairy realm. However, Graham was so shocked by the apparition that he failed to follow through, and Kirk disappeared forever, trapped in the realm of the fairies.

A UFO Investigator Takes a Second Look

Nearly three centuries after Kirk's mysterious disappearance, renowned UFOlogist Jacques Vallée revisited Kirk's work in his book, "Passport to Magonia." Vallée argued that the strange encounters of the past can be interpreted through the modern lens of the alien encounter, drawing parallels between contemporary UFO sightings and historical accounts of otherworldly encounters.

Vallée proposed that encounters with fairies, aliens, and other supernatural entities may be linked to altered states of consciousness, parallel realities, or interdimensional experiences. This concept resonates with Kirk's notion of second sight and the ability to perceive and interact with the unseen realm. Intriguingly, Kirk's idea that "second sight" is hereditary coincides with the common notion that UFO abductions often run within families, suggesting a possible genetic or hereditary component to these phenomena.

The “Elemental Spirits”

While some may dismiss these ideas as the fanciful musings of eccentric individuals, the debate surrounding "elemental spirits" can be traced back to the very origins of Christianity. In his epistles to the Galatians and Colossians, the Apostle Paul warned against "elemental spirits," which could be interpreted as either lower passions or actual spiritual entities. In Galatians 4:8, Paul cautions, "Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods."

The early Church Fathers also grappled with this concept. Origen of Alexandria, writing in 248 AD, acknowledged the existence of invisible agents or guardians responsible for the natural world, but denied that these entities were demons. This demonstrates that the idea of unseen realms and their inhabitants has been a topic of theological and philosophical discussion for centuries. Origen said:

"We indeed also maintain with regard not only to the fruits of the earth, but to every flowing stream and every breath of air that the ground brings forth those things which are said to grow up naturally — that the water springs in fountains, and refreshes the earth with running streams — that the air is kept pure, and supports the life of those who breathe it, only in consequence of the agency and control of certain beings whom we may call invisible husbandmen and guardians; but we deny that those invisible agents are demons."

The enigmatic connection between fairies, UFOs, and the paranormal challenges our understanding of reality and suggests that there may be dimensions of existence beyond our ordinary perception. From Robert Kirk's "The Secret Commonwealth" to Jacques Vallée's "Passport to Magonia," these ideas have persisted across time and culture, inviting us to consider the possibility that the boundaries of human experience and consciousness are far more fluid and mysterious than we often acknowledge.
